Pécs

Sunday, December 2

Hotel Palatinus was beautiful. The lobby was entirely built in Art Nouveau, from stained-glass windows to the details in the ceiling work.  The economy rooms need a bit of help, though, so stay in the renovated rooms if you decide to go.

We started off  the day in the restaurant with the included breakfast. The view is worth going.

Pécs

We then went to the UNESCO Early Christian Mausoleum. The Romans controlled Pécs in the 4th Century and there are many Christian influences found in the underground city. The sites were discovered in the 18th Century and adjacent site have been found since then.

After this, we went to the Zsolnay Museum. The Zsolnay factory began in 1853, but really began making history in 1893 when they began making special ceramics that were frost-resistant and lasted longer than traditional paintings, murals, or even roof tiles. They created their ceramics so that they had bright iridescent colors and  Art Nouveau designs.

When we were done with these, we met up with Zoltán & Évi again to take a tour of the city. Sipping on Forrault Bor, we walked in and out of the streets and talked about architecture and Hungarian history. We finished the night with a few Czech beers in a Czech restaurant.
