Miyajima Island

Today we went to Miyajima Island, where there is a Torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine that is placed in a spot where it is sometimes in the middle of the ocean and sometimes in the middle of a beach. A neat bonus for this place is the deer. They are very docile and will let humans pet them (and in my case pester them a bit). This island is also famous for their oysters, which are very big and meaty. We spent the day here relaxing and it was very fun. If we had our swimsuits, the ocean would have been wonderful- perfect temperature and sandy beaches.

The Torii gate. The neat thing about this torii gate is that during the day, you can walk out to the shrine on dry land. At night, though, the tide comes in and the whole area goes under water.

Possibly the best oyster we have ever eaten. They pull them from the beach by the torii gate when the water is gone.
